Dorothy Long, of 298 Sanders Road, Buffalo NY departed this life on July 27th, 2025 at her home.
A Time to be born
Dorothy L. McKnight-Long was born October 21, 1936 in Cross Hill SC to the late Melvin McKnight and Willie B. Redd-McKnight.
A Time to Live
Dorothy attended Bethel Elementary School in Cross Hill SC and attended Bell Street High School in Clinton SC where she received her high school diploma At an early age Dorothy joined the Zion Hill Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. L.B. Mitchell
In 1956 Dorothy affectionally known as “Dot” moved to Buffalo NY where she found employment at GiGi’s Restaurant, Western Electrical Plant, and Trico Ultra Tool & Die Plant.
While in Buffalo Dot became a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor William Gillison
Dot later met and married the late Calvin F. Long, they were married for 35 years
A Time for Family
In addition to her parents, Dot was preceded in death by five sisters Vera Skinner, Shirley Jones, Gladys Williams, Mammie McKnight, and Mary-Thelma McKnight. Two brothers, Willie E. McKnight and James Henry McKnight. One brother-in-law Henry Simpson who affectionately referred to her as “Red”. Dot loved her brother-in-law dearly and they spoke with each other every Sunday and talked about sports.
Those left to cherish her memories are four loving daughters, Gerrilyn McKnight, Connie Long, Stacy Long all of Buffalo NY, and Toni Long of Dearborn GA. One sister, Patsy Simpson of Cross Hill SC. One sister-in-law, Nellie McKnight of Mountville SC. One brother-in-law Ruben Jone of Buffalo NY. Four grandchildren, Tamara Jones of Charlotte NC, Deshon Harvey of Atlanta GA, Tyrik Young & Tyron Young of Buffalo NY. Four great grandchildren Dorian, Denim, Lauren, and London Reeves of Charlotte NC and a great host of nieces and nephews.
The book of life for Dorothy Lee McKnight-Long closed on July 27, 2025. She is in God’s hand with her Heavenly family. Dorothy’s spirit will live on with those that loved and cherished her.
The family is at the home of her sister, Patsy Simpson, 148 Lehman St., Cross Hill, SC
